The Paper Bag Princess

Intellectual independence is a decision available to either gender.

Princess Elizabeth uses her distinctly independent judgment to face a Dragon and her betrothed.

Full Review

When a dragon destroys her castle and spirits away her betrothed, Prince Ronald, Princess Elizabeth sets out to rescue the Prince, wearing her last possession, a paper bag.. Seeing that the dragon is proud of his strength and fire, Elizabeth manipulates the ‘show off’ dragon to exhaustion. Then, when she frees Prince Ronald she makes a discovery that changes everything.

The illustrations successfully convey the mood of this fun story. We see the foolish vanity of the dragon five times, but only see Elizabeth’s sound character judgment twice. But by making the latter the climax of the story Munsch ends with a focus on Elizabeth’s wonderful sense of self.
